Crochet Triangle Stitch

Swatch of the crochet triangle stitch

The crochet Triangle Stitch is an unusual textured pattern made from individual triangular shapes arranged across the fabric. Each triangle gradually increases in height from one side to the other, giving it that distinctive sloping shape.

Rows of open chain spaces separate the triangles keeping the fabric light despite the solid shapes. The triangles also alternate their placement as the pattern develops, creating a striking geometric design.

It looks complicated at first glance but the construction is surprisingly logical once you’ve made the first few triangles.

About the Crochet Triangle Stitch

The defining feature of the stitch is the way each triangle is made. Rather than increasing in the usual way, you begin with a short chain and work progressively taller stitches back along it. This change in stitch height, from single crochet to treble crochet, creates the sloping side of the triangle.

Because the triangles are separated by chains and skipped stitches, there’s plenty of open space surrounding each triangle. The result is a bold pattern that combines solid texture with an airy background.

Getting the triangle to look uniform may take a little practice, especially when you’re first learning the stitch sequence.

Tips for Crocheting the Triangle Stitch

The stitch multiple for this pattern works over a multiple of 4 plus another additional 2 chains.

Each triangle is made separately before moving on to the next. Try to keep your tension consistent when making each triangle so they remain similar in size.

Take particular care when working into the chains at the tops of the triangles as these anchor the open rows between the triangles.

After establishing the first row of triangles, rows 2-5 form the four row repeat.
