Crochet Basketweave Stitch

Swatch of the crochet basketweave stitch

The Crochet Basketweave Stitch creates a beautifully raised fabric that looks remarkably like strips of woven material. The texture comes from alternating groups of front post and back post double crochet stitches, which push sections of the fabric forwards and backwards. Although the finished stitch looks quite intricate, the technique becomes much easier once you understand where the post stitches are placed. The repeating blocks produce a substantial, highly textured crochet fabric with plenty of visual interest.

About the Basketweave Stitch

Basketweave is a classic crochet post stitch pattern. Instead of inserting your hook into the loops along the top of the stitches, you work around the posts of the double crochet stitches from the previous row.

Groups of front post stitches appear raised towards you while groups of back post stitches sit farther behind. Changing the order of these groups after several rows creates the illusion that one section passes over or underneath another.

Tips for a Neat Basketweave Texture

Don’t worry if the woven effect isn’t immediately obvious after the first couple of rows. Basketweave is one of those stitches that needs little height before the pattern really starts showing itself.

When inserting your hook around the posts, try not to pull the stitches excessively tight. Keeping your tension comfortable makes it easier to work subsequent rows and gives the raised blocks a fuller appearance. It’s also worth occasionally checking your groups as you crochet. Because you’re repeatedly switching between four front post and four back post stitches, accidentally working five of one is very easy.

Is crochet Basketweave Stitch difficult?

it looks more complicated than it is. I would classify it as intermediate because the placement requires more attention than a basic crochet stitch.

Give the pattern a few rows to develop. The basket-like effect becomes more noticeable once several groups of front and back post stitches have been stacked and alternated.
